As you know, I’m always looking for “honest” travel experiences. Those that allow me to reconnect with myself through inspiring stories and natural surroundings, delicious homegrown food, good wine and a deep connection with the local culture. Well, this travel experience is exactly one of those.
I might be biased since this is my home region, but the untouched beauty of Abruzzo makes it one of Italy’s best-kept secrets: rural villages, pristine beaches, high mountains, natural parks and a fascinating culinary and wine culture.
Abruzzo is of those places where you keep returning to discover always a new nuance of it. And that’s what happened to me exploring the coastal area of the region with the local winemakers Fantini Wines. An experience that I’m sharing with you here to inspire your next escape to a little-known area of Italy and discover it by following the scented notes of great local wines.

A long weekend. If you are interested in extending your journey, I have personally visited and selected authentic hotels and experiences in Abruzzo as well as in the regions nearby. To get my advice on your journey planning get in touch here.
All year round. However, my favourite seasons to explore this area of Abruzzo are late spring and late summer/beginning of fall.
If you are passionate about wine as much as I am, I’d start the journey by switching off and relaxing with a wine tasting. I loved this experience because it was a taste itinerary among the multifaceted land of Abruzzo as well as a way to connect with my hosts and discover the fascinating story of the Fantini Wines family.

When I attended the lab, I cooked one of my favourite local dishes “palotte cacio e ova”. Taking place in a professional cooking school – one of those where cooks get trained, this cooking lab offers a funny but pro way to get to know and experiment with some typical recipes from Abruzzo.

The sweetest memory I have from my days in Abruzzo with the Fantini Wines family. Rent an e-bike when sunset time is approaching and reach the Costa Dei Trabocchi biking along the sea. Hopefully, the sky will be as pink as the one I found. This is going to be a precious moment for you to connect with nature and yourself.

That’s correct, “on the sea”. Indeed, this coastal area is characterised by several typical constructions called “trabocchi”. Once used to fish, these structures were then transformed into seafood restaurants where today you can dine cradled by the sound of the crashing waves beneath you.

WHERE ~ Crecchio
BEMYJOURNEY’S EXPERIENCE ~ “My highlights of Borgo Baccile are the refreshing walk in the woods in the early morning to drink my first espresso in the charming village of Crecchio, the infinity swimming pool at sunset time and the rural life I got to taste by staying there.” Andrea
WHAT TO EXPECT ~ Surrounded by vineyards, Borgo Baccile by Fantini Wines is a charming and peaceful wine resort obtained from the careful restoration of rural dwellings with a long history behind them. “My father Valentino told me that the houses had been built by our ancestors at the end of the ‘700. He was born in what is now the Old Cellar. As long as I can remember, the houses have always been arranged like this, like a village, and revolved around the square where every evening was a party: all the farmers in the area, returning from the countryside, gathered there enjoying songs and dances” (from Borgo Baccile website). At the Borgo, you will find an infinity pool overlooking the vineyards, a restaurant, different gardens, 7 rooms and apartments and 4 sweet donkeys: Rosina, Pasqualino, Gelsomino and Asia. Prices start from 100 euro per night.
FOOD PHILOSOPHY ~ Elodia cooks with love, and you can feel it at every bite. From breakfast time, when every day she prepares homemade cakes and brioches together with the unmissable ham&cheese omelette, up to the typical dishes and handmade pasta she will prepare for you at lunch and dinner using fresh ingredients coming from her vegetable garden.
COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY ~ The property has been renewed and rebuilt keeping the historical style of the village and using “green” and recyclable materials. The energy needed to run the property is almost exclusively generated by solar panels. Moreover, Borgo Baccile follows a no-gas and no-waste policy when it comes to food and resource management.
OTHER INFORMATION
The property is also available for private events, like weddings. Parking is available at the property.
Closest airport : Pescara approx 30 minutes, Roma Fiumicino approx 3.20 h, Rome Ciampino approx 2.30 h.
